Since Msaa

Ever since Msaa
Since when he grew dreadlocks
when he closed his kinyozi
Went off to start another one in upcountry
Since when that too went down

When he went down
And jokes flew of how sick he was
How like a woman, Msaa a man,
Fetched kunde leaves and firewood and cooked
Like a woman

Ever since that day when Msaa’s father wondered
Disbelieved that his son, had ever been to Nairobi
Since the day I looked at him and got lost
not knowing him.

Ever since Msaa
I keep family close
Call to say I love them
Travel when they need me
Do all I must
For misfortune miss me when it comes knocking
