Get To Know Akil Ahmed (El Poet)

• How can you describe yourself in a summarized manner?

Fire spitting, eyebrow raising, selfie taking, knowledge saying young Kenyan with Somali origins.

• When did you pen your first independent piece (apart from school work)?

This was back in 2004. Albeit the piece being heavily hip-hop influenced. I remember reciting it to my friends who were in awe with, the back-then, weak rhymes and alliterations.

• What inspires your writing?

I have had different inspirations in my growth curve as an artist. When I first started out (I know NO OTHER POET WILL ADMIT TO THIS SO PLACE ME IN THE HALL OF DEFAMED ARTISTS ALREADY) I did it for the applause and to simply see people in awe of my word play skills. When you grow up however, you stand on that performance stage (or your blog) and you see hundreds – on a good day, thousands of people paying attention to every word that comes out of your mouth (or their display) and you realize that you can make a difference. Your art immediately becomes your tool to change the world one word at a time. Whatever greatly influences you as an artist becomes your inspiration.

• Apart from writing what else do you do? (Hehe we know how that question feels like)

Haha, I am a student of the advertising world. I like to try and bring brands to life.

• What do you think is man’s greatest invention?

That is easy. The stage. Whoever raised the 1st ever public speaking platform by those 30’’s or 2 meters and allowed one person to inspire, motivate or entertain a group of people should be commemorated and a statue built of him. The stage emancipated the black Americans, freed African countries, fed Sarabi, gave Just a Band a platform to explore their creative minds and offered a young Somali boy birthed by Kenyan soil a chance to change the world.

• Who would you term as a Kenyan hero? Why?

Every mother walking in this country and the world. I have seen the burden a mother carries for her family and they are the real heroes giving this beautiful nation a spine on which it functions.

• The world was to end tomorrow, what would you do till then?

Easy. Play Call of Duty. But forreal though, pray.

• What’s your earliest memory?

Earliest is the oldest in this context yes? Playing cha mama with our hot neighbourhood girl who everyone had a crush on. OHHHHH Yvonne.

• If you were a cartoon character, which one would it be?

The reality – Pink Panther (Tall, lanky, smart and clumsy)

The Dream: Professor Utonium. The idea of having three daughters who can do all the house chores in seconds, impresses me.

• Three words to describe your brain?

Brobdingnagian
Verisimilitude
Pulchritudinous

Yeeeeah! I totally googled those.

• What is that song that never gets boring to your ears?

M.A.A.D CITY – Kendrick (YA YA YA!)

• What is the most unforgettable thing that has ever happened to you on stage?

One day I was performing at Wamathai’s event and Wambui of Elani shouted my name. My brain almost came 🙂

• What is that thing you did as a kid you wish you still would?

SHOUT!!! Only kids can shout randomly and no one thinks they are crazy.

• What do you think of the Kenyan creative and artistic industry?

I think the underground scene is full of talent and positivity and I will not change that. It is pure. A deep culture is being brewed from that level.

I think the mainstream industry is mediocre and shambolic. I think Kenyan artists are competing with Kenyan artists and not the world. I think mainstream artists are not self reflecting and critical of their art and are a disappointing depiction of the talent that exists.

• Who’s that character you wish you’d pull out of the screen/book and elope with?

EASY, Wonder Woman. She can use her magic rope to compel me to do anything she wants.

• Any random question you’d like to ask the world?

Batman or Superman?
